When you started your business there was much fanfare and excitement and talk of fancy vacations taken with the family from all the profit that is produced. It’s not quite like that anymore. Where did the risk taker go?
It’s easy to get bogged down in all the little details of running your business, but you still need to have that “big picture” mentality in laying out the future direction for your company.
Sometimes it’s just a simple statement from the beginning of the year – “I’m going to go in a new direction and add something to the marketing mix.” You discuss this statement with your marketing consultant and they recommend video marketing. In just a few short months you are adding eight 3-minute videos to your social media strategy and they are gaining momentum. It helps you through the tough months in retail.
When you look back it seemed like it was such a big task – but now you realize it was your own fear holding you back from pulling away from old marketing techniques that are dead.
This is a real life example of one of my accounts this year.
Now we are talking about doing small one minute tips with a hand held device (not a big production) in order to be a bit more timely. This owner is proud of her changes and now embraces new things faster. “It’s like I opened up a whole new world of customers that just found me – and I’ve been around for over 20 years.” – Exactly!
Be brave and remember the risks you were willing to take when you opened your business. Where did the risk taker go? Take some new steps and be creative. Don’t look to the side to see what your competitors are doing.
Find out where your customers are, what they like, where they dine, how they like to communicate and BE THERE.
